Gimbel's in Paramus

  1. I worked there in the ladies' shoe department in the mid-1970s. Coincidentally, the Nordstrom ladies' shoe department at the mall entrance is exactly where the Gimbels ladies' shoe department is now. What a great place to work! I was very fortunate to experience working there at such a young age. Gimbels was a well-managed, world class store with a higher-end clientele than Bamberger's (now Macy's) back then. The mall was open-air (not enclosed) with beautiful gardens. I'd stop by Arcadian Gardens to watch them feed the monkeys in the pet department during my lunch break. I remember customers lined up at the entrances to buy pet rocks, mood rings and digital watches when they were all the rage. I cut class at college so that I could see Gerald Ford give a presidential campaign speech at the mall entrance to Gimbels. Mr. Perkins was the store manager at the time.
